Coach Vic King, the winningest basketball coach in Campbell County history, died Wednesday night after a brief battle with cancer. Over a career that spanned the better part of 40-years, King was head basketball coach at La Follette Middle School, Oneida High School, and the Christian Academy of CampbellCounty. He served as assistant head coach at Union County and Jellico High Schools. As a head coach, he won nearly 500 basketball games. At WLAF, he led the sales team and was director of marketing. Victor Bradley King “Coach King” was 60-years old. (11/28/2014-6:00 AM) A special thanks to Coach King Ever since my first transistor radio, about age five, I always wanted to be on the radio. In junior high, Cliff Jennings, C.J. the DJ, let me sit in once in a while on his nightly radio show. But it wasn’t until 1971 that my first chance to be on the air came around. And it was because of Vic King. And Paul Wright. Paul was Vic’s neighbor, and he was looking for someone to keep stats for his La Follette Owl football broadcasts over WLAF Radio. Vic told me that Paul asked him to do it, but he told him no, but that he knew someone who would do it. Me, the Freeman boy. Paul said OK, and that Friday night, the microphone that Paul said came over on the Mayflower was handed to me. I was finally on the air and have been ever since. Thanks to Paul Wright and my first agent, Vic King. (11/28/2014 - 6:00 AM) It’s official. LMS gym floor is now King Court. Vic King was a La Follette Owl from start to finish. He grew up in La Follette, played for the Owls, was team captain, and came straight back out of college and coached the La Follette Middle School Owls basketball team to hundreds of wins and several championships. The man who loved the Owls so much passed away last fall after a brief battle with cancer, and Tuesday night, the Campbell County School Board unanimously voted to name the basketball court at LMS King Court. The gym was named Irwin Gym back in the 1980s, when King was head coach, after late school board member Jerry Irwin.(02/11/2015 - 6:00 AM) |
